Known throughout the region as West Virginia’s First Lady of Soul, Doris Fields—professionally known as Lady D—is a commanding vocalist, songwriter, actress, storyteller, director, and cultural ambassador whose artistry reflects the heart and history of Appalachia. Her distinctive sound brings together blues, soul, R&B, gospel, and jazz, creating music that is emotionally powerful, deeply personal, and firmly connected to her West Virginia roots.

A coal miner’s daughter raised in the Cabin Creek and Kayford area, Lady D began singing as a child and developed a lifelong passion for performance. Her career has taken her from churches and community stages to major cultural events and nationally recognized performances. She has opened for the legendary O’Jays, performed for The HistoryMakers: An Evening with Henry Louis Gates Jr., and appeared at the 2009 Obama for Change Inaugural Ball with her band, MI$$ION, after her original song “Go Higher” was selected as the winning Obama inaugural song.

Lady D’s accomplishments also include receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the All Black Schools Sports and Academic Hall of Fame and winning the DC Blues Society Blues Challenge. Beyond the concert stage, she has toured with her acclaimed one-woman musical production, The Lady and the Empress, which celebrates the life and music of blues legend Bessie Smith. Her theatrical work has also included productions with Theater West Virginia and other respected performing-arts organizations.

Equally devoted to preserving and passing on Black musical traditions, Lady D has served as a master artist in blues and Black gospel through the West Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship Program. She is also the founder and organizer of the Simply Jazz and Blues Festival, using her platform to create opportunities for musicians, educate audiences, and preserve the cultural importance of blues, gospel, jazz, and soul music in Appalachia.

Her creative work continues to expand beyond traditional performance. Through projects such as Appalachian BlueSpeak, Lady D combines music, poetry, visual art, history, and storytelling to illuminate the Black Appalachian experience and celebrate the voices, struggles, faith, and resilience of her community.
